Litter boxes for multiple cats: how many and which type
Two cats, three boxes, and none of them next to each other. That rule solves most multi-cat litter problems before any product does.

The count
One box per cat, plus one. Two cats means three boxes. This is the most consistently supported rule in feline behaviour guidance, and it exists because cats are not good at sharing a toilet: one cat can guard a box, and a bullied cat will simply stop using it and urinate elsewhere.
The boxes must be in different locations — not three in a row in the utility room. If all the boxes are together, a guarding cat only has to block one doorway.
Size still wins over features
| Setup | Works for | Fails because |
|---|---|---|
| Three large uncovered boxes, separate rooms | Nearly every multi-cat home | Visual clutter; litter tracking |
| Two boxes side by side | Nothing, really | Counts as one location to a cat |
| One self-cleaning box for three cats | Nobody | Queueing, motor noise, one refusal blocks all |
| Covered boxes | Dogs that raid boxes | Trapped ammonia, refusals |
Self-cleaning boxes in a multi-cat home
An automatic box handles volume but not politics. It still represents one location, and cats that don't get along will not queue for it. If you want automation, the sensible arrangement is automatic boxes plus at least one manual box per cat in a separate room.
Watch for the warning signs. If one cat starts urinating outside the box after a new cat arrives, that is usually a resource-guarding problem, not a litter problem. Adding boxes in separate rooms is the first fix. Straining to urinate with little or no output is an emergency — especially in male cats — and needs a vet, not a new box.
Questions people ask
How many litter boxes for two cats?
Three, in three different locations. One per cat plus one is the standard guidance and it prevents most guarding problems before they start.
Can two cats share one litter box?
They can, but it is the most common cause of a cat refusing the box. Sharing works until it doesn't, and by then the habit of going elsewhere is established.
Is a self-cleaning box good for multiple cats?
Only alongside manual boxes. A single automatic box is one location, and cats that don't get along won't queue for it.
How often should I scoop with multiple cats?
At least twice a day. With three cats, twice daily is the minimum for odour and for keeping the boxes acceptable to every cat.
