Best pet camera for checking on your dog at work
A camera answers 'is the dog okay?' It does not fix separation anxiety — and treating it as a fix is where people go wrong.

What you actually need
| Feature | Worth paying for? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi, 1080p | Yes | Baseline. 720p is not enough to see a distressed dog |
| Two-way audio | Sometimes | Can reassure — or confuse a dog that can't find you |
| Treat dispenser | Sometimes | Useful for enrichment; not for calming |
| Motion and sound alerts | Yes | The point is knowing without watching all day |
| Cloud subscription | Only if you need history | Often the real cost over years |
| Pan and tilt | Nice to have | Useful for covering a whole room |
The honest limits
A camera is an information tool. It will tell you whether your dog is sleeping, pacing, barking or destroying things. It will not solve separation anxiety, and talking to a panicking dog through a speaker can make it worse — the dog hears you and cannot find you.
If you see pacing, drooling, howling or destructive behaviour within minutes of leaving, that is separation-related distress, not boredom. Handling it needs a behaviour plan, sometimes with a vet involved. A camera confirms the problem; it doesn't treat it.
Privacy, which nobody mentions
- Change the default password immediately — this is the most common camera compromise.
- Prefer a camera with local storage if you don't want footage in a vendor's cloud.
- Place it so it does not view a neighbour's window or a shared space.
- Check whether the vendor supports two-factor authentication.
What to do with what you learn
If your dog sleeps most of the day, that's normal and good. If it barks for the first twenty minutes then settles, that's common and often improves with a consistent departure routine. If it never settles, that's the signal to get help.
Questions people ask
What should I look for in a pet camera?
1080p, motion and sound alerts, and a secure login with two-factor authentication. Treat cloud subscriptions as part of the real price.
Can a pet camera help with separation anxiety?
No. It confirms the problem. Treatment needs a behaviour plan — and talking through the speaker can make a panicking dog worse.
Is it normal for my dog to sleep all day while I'm at work?
Yes, most adult dogs sleep 12–14 hours a day. Sleeping is a good sign, not a worrying one.
Are pet cameras a security risk?
Poorly secured cameras are commonly compromised. Change the default password and enable two-factor authentication if available.
