Costs

How much does it cost to spay a dog?

Weight drives the price more than anything else, because anaesthetic dose and surgical time scale with it.

The ranges

Dog sizeTypical clinicLow-cost clinic
Under 20 lb$200 – $400$80 – $150
20 – 50 lb$250 – $550$100 – $200
50 – 90 lb$400 – $800$150 – $300
90 lb+$600 – $1,200$250 – $450

Add $60–$180 for pre-anaesthetic bloodwork, and more if the dog is overweight, in heat, or older — all of which increase surgical risk and time.

Why the price varies so much

  • Weight and body condition — the dominant factor.
  • Anaesthetic protocol — IV fluids, intubation and dedicated monitoring cost more and are safer.
  • Region — urban practices cost meaningfully more than rural ones.
  • Timing — a spay during heat is technically harder and costs more.
  • Laparoscopic option — less invasive, usually $200–$500 more.

Low-cost options are legitimate

Many areas have subsidised spay/neuter clinics, and shelters often run voucher programmes. They are not inferior — high-volume clinics do a lot of these and are often very good at it. Ask your local shelter first; it is the cheapest route in most places.

On timing: the traditional "around six months" advice is no longer universal. Large-breed dogs have evidence supporting later spaying for joint and cancer risk, while shelters generally spay earlier for population reasons. This is a genuine trade-off — discuss it with your vet rather than following a generic rule.

An E-collar ($15–$40), a recovery crate or pen, and 10–14 days of restricted activity. Budget for the time, not just the surgery.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to spay a dog?

$200–$1,200 depending almost entirely on size, plus bloodwork. Low-cost and shelter-linked clinics typically run $80–$450.

Why is spaying a large dog more expensive?

Anaesthetic dose, surgical time and complication risk all scale with body weight. Large dogs also need more monitoring and fluids.

What is the best age to spay a dog?

It depends on size and breed. Large breeds may benefit from later spaying for joint and cancer risk; discuss it with your vet rather than applying a fixed rule.

Are low-cost spay clinics safe?

Generally yes. High-volume clinics do many of these procedures and are often very experienced. Check that they include pain relief and monitoring.
