Dog harness sizing: large, small and medium breeds

Harness sizes differ by up to four inches between brands. Measure the dog, not the label.

Measure these two things

  1. Chest girth — the widest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs. This is the number that determines size.
  2. Neck opening — around the base of the neck where the harness sits. Matters most for narrow-headed breeds that can back out of a loose harness.

Use a soft tape, snug but not tight, with the dog standing. Measure twice. A harness sold as "medium" ranges from 22 to 30 inches girth depending on the manufacturer, so the label is nearly meaningless on its own.

What changes by size

SizeMain riskWhat to look for
Small (<25 lb)Backing out of the harnessStep-in or vest style, more adjustment points, narrow straps that don't chafe
Medium (25–60 lb)Chafing behind the front legsY-front chest, padding on load-bearing straps
Large (60–90 lb)Hardware failure under loadMetal D-rings, webbing that runs continuously through the load path
Giant (90 lb+)Shoulder restrictionWide chest panel, no strap crossing the shoulder joint

Small dogs

Narrow-chested breeds — whippets, Italian greyhounds, some terriers — can slip a standard harness entirely. Look for a design with a third adjustment point at the neck, or a vest style that closes around the body rather than over the head. Test by gently pulling backwards at the chest ring; the harness should not slide over the shoulders.

Large dogs

The failure point on a large dog's harness is the stitching where the D-ring meets the webbing, not the fabric. Look for hardware rated for the dog's weight, and check the seams monthly. A harness that has held for two years can fail on the day the dog lunges at a squirrel.

The two-finger test: every strap should accept two fingers and no more, checked with the dog standing and again after a walk. Dogs change shape with coat and condition, so re-check monthly — especially on a growing dog.

Questions people ask

How do I measure my dog for a harness?

Measure chest girth at the widest part of the ribcage behind the front legs, plus the neck opening. Size on girth — S/M/L labels vary by four inches between brands.

What size harness for a 50 lb dog?

Usually a medium, around 26–32 inches girth, but measure rather than assume. The same weight dog can differ by several inches depending on build.

Why does my dog's harness rub under the front legs?

Either it is too loose under load or the shape is wrong for the dog's chest. A Y-front design distributes pressure better than a single horizontal strap.

Can a dog slip out of a harness?

Yes, especially narrow-chested small breeds. Look for a third neck adjustment point and test by gently pulling back at the chest ring.
