Feeding
How much wet food should I feed my cat?
Cats are chronically under-hydrated on dry food alone. Wet food is the easiest fix — the trick is not overfeeding while you do it.

The starting numbers
| Adult cat weight | Wet food per day | Approx. cans (3 oz) |
|---|---|---|
| 7–9 lb | 4–5 oz | 1.5 |
| 9–12 lb | 5–6.5 oz | 2 |
| 12–15 lb | 6.5–8 oz | 2.5 |
These are starting points for wet-only feeding. Calorie density varies a lot between brands, so check the kcal per can and compare against your cat's daily need — roughly 20–25 kcal per pound of ideal body weight for an average indoor cat.
Mixing wet and dry
The common mistake is adding wet food on top of the full dry ration. Instead, replace calories: if a 3 oz can is about 80 kcal and the dry food is 350 kcal per cup, then one can replaces roughly a quarter cup of dry. Reduce the dry by that much and the cat's total intake stays the same.
Why hydration matters: cats evolved to get most of their water from prey. Many drink too little from a bowl, which concentrates urine and is a risk factor for urinary crystals and blockages — particularly in male cats. Wet food is the most reliable way to raise water intake.
Practical routine
- Split wet food across two or three meals. Cats prefer several small meals to one large one.
- Don't leave wet food out more than about 30 minutes in warm weather.
- Keep water bowls away from the food bowl — many cats drink more when they're separate.
- Transition gradually over a week if your cat isn't used to wet food.
Watch for urinary signs. Straining in the litter box, crying while urinating, or no urine at all — especially in a male cat — is an emergency. Call a vet immediately. A blocked cat can die within 24–48 hours.
Questions people ask
How much wet food should a cat eat daily?
Roughly 4–8 oz depending on weight, for wet-only feeding. Check kcal per can and aim for about 20–25 kcal per pound of ideal body weight.
Can I feed my cat only wet food?
Yes, and many vets prefer it for hydration. Watch dental health and cost, and keep portions controlled to avoid weight gain.
How much dry food should I reduce when adding wet?
Replace calories, don't add them. One 3 oz can is roughly a quarter cup of dry food — reduce the dry by that amount.
Is wet food bad for a cat's teeth?
Dry food does not meaningfully clean teeth. Dental health comes from brushing, check-ups and dental treats, not from kibble texture.
